* "Chansonata" is Rick
Sowash's coined word for a hybrid musical form, combining the "chanson" (the
French word for "song") and the "sonata." Thus: "Chansonata." The
intended definition is: a work for voices, with or without accompaniment,
in three or four movements, exhibiting musical architecture more
typically found in a "sonata" and lyrics unified by a common
literary idea throughout the movements. Also, the
movements are intended to contrast with each other
just as in the movements of a sonata -- ie., Fast-Slow-Fast,
etc.
